Achyuta Samanta gets 50th honorary doctorate



BHUBANESWAR: Achyuta Samanta, founder of KIIT and KISS and Kandhamal MP, received Doctor of Literature (honoris causa) degree from his alma mater Utkal University during its 52nd convocation held here on Friday. It was his 50th honorary doctorate degree.
Samanta was conferred this honorary degree in recognition of his contribution to the field of education and social service. He received the degree from Odisha governor Ganeshi Lal in the presence of guests.
“I have been conferred many accolades and awards. However, some awards are extra special, like this one. I am elated that Utkal University, my own alma mater, is conferring honorary DLitt degree on me, thereby making it my 50th honorary doctorate,” said the Lok Sabha member, who dedicated this award to his mother and all her struggles and sacrifice.
He was recently awarded an honorary doctorate from Birla Global University and an honorary degree from Berhampur University.
Tessy Thomas, distinguished scientist and director general of aeronautical systems, defence research and development organisation (DRDO), received Doctor of Science (honoris causa) for her contribution to the field of defence research and aeronautical science.
Justice V Gopala Gowda, retired Supreme Court judge and former chief justice of Orissa High Court, also received honorary doctorate degree at the convocation for his contribution to the field of law and judiciary.
